Abstract

The semi-arid Northeast of Brazil is a geographical area characterized by high spatial and temporal variability in rainfall patterns. Therefore, this study sought to establish the temporal regimes of rainfall and the rainy season in the city of Campina Grande, Paraiba, as it is the central hub of this intermediate geographical region, and to investigate the socio-environmental consequences of the drought from 2012 to 2016. These determinations were the main objectives. A climatological series of monthly and annual rainfall data, spanning more than sixty years, provided by the Executive Agency for Water Management of the State of Paraiba (AESA), was used. The analyses were performed using climatological statistical criteria, establishing temporal regimes and those of the rainy season, with emphasis on the aforementioned drought. The main results indicated that the rainfall regime models are asymmetrical and irregular, the temporal dispersions are inversely proportional to the expected values, and the rainy season has a chance of being dry. The temporal fluctuations in rainfall are indicative of natural variability, and there is no evidence of climate change. The prolonged drought had a significant impact on the aforementioned geographic region, with severe effects on water supply and key activities in the primary sector.
