SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE TIME AND ANXIETY DEVELOPMENT AMONG ADOLESCENTS FROM A PRIVATE SCHOOL

Considering the exponential growth of social media and its widespread use by adolescentes, it aims to verify the relationship between social media use and the development of anxiety among adolescentes. To this end, we proceed a cross-sectional study with an observational and analytical approach, conducted in a private school in Goiânia and Anápolis, Goiás, using a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). In this way, it is observed that 61.2% use social media for more than four hours daily, with a predominance of platforms such as WhatsApp (83%), Instagram (96.6%), and TikTok (74.8%), which were associated with moderate to severe levels of anxiety. In contrast, the use of less interactive networks, such as Twitter (30.6%), was less associated with anxious symptoms, which allows us to conclude that the analysis revealed that factors such as social comparison and the constant need for online validation are intensified in interactive networks, exacerbating anxiety symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of preventive interventions for more balanced social media use, with the active involvement of schools, families, and health professionals in protecting the mental health of adolescents in an increasingly digitalized environment.
