Abstract

Introduction: Health professionals were among the groups most exposed to SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic, presenting a high risk of contamination and development of persistent manifestations after the acute phase of infection. Recent studies have shown that post-COVID-19 syndrome may trigger physical, neurological, respiratory, and psychological changes capable of compromising quality of life and functional capacity. Objective: To analyze the main sequelae presented by health professionals after COVID-19 infection. Method: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, conducted with technical and higher education health professionals working in hospitals of the public health network in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Data collection was carried out between August and October 2021 through a structured online questionnaire available on the Google Forms platform. Professionals with a confirmed diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection between 2020 and 2021 participated in the study. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s chi-square test, considering a 95% significance level. Results: A total of 97 health professionals participated in the study, predominantly female (86.60%), aged between 20 and 30 years (39.18%), and working in the metropolitan region of the state (56.70%). The most frequently reported persistent symptoms were tiredness/fatigue (70.10%), smell disorders (63.92%), taste disorders (59.79%), fever (56.70%), anxiety (50.52%), early fatigue (40.21%), indisposition (37.11%), irritability (37.11%), memory loss (36.08%), and headache (31.96%). Statistically significant associations were observed between sex and tiredness/fatigue (p=0.043) and headache (p=0.008), with these symptoms being more frequent among women. Conclusion: The study demonstrated a high frequency of persistent physical and psychological alterations among health professionals after SARS-CoV-2 infection, reinforcing the need for multiprofessional follow-up, occupational health policies, and expansion of surveillance and rehabilitation strategies aimed at workers affected by COVID-19.
