COMPARISON OF PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS IN THE TREATMENT OF ANXIETY: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Anxiety is one of the most prevalent mental disorders today, becoming pathological when it manifests in a persistent and disproportionate manner, impacting the individual's global functioning. The objective of this study was to understand the efficacy of psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions in the treatment of anxiety disorders, highlighting their advantages, limitations, and possibilities for integration. Methodologically, a qualitative narrative review was conducted, with searches in the SciELO, PubMed, PePSIC, and Google Scholar databases. Ten scientific publications (seven articles and three classic books) published between 2016 and 2026 were selected, using the Rayyan software for material screening. The results and discussions demonstrate that while pharmacology (especially with SSRIs and SNRIs) acts on the modulation of neurotransmitters for rapid symptomatic relief, psychotherapy, with an emphasis on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), focuses on restructuring cognitive and emotional patterns to offer lasting coping strategies. It was found that combined treatment presents superior clinical outcomes, especially in moderate to severe cases, as the interventions act on distinct and complementary brain circuits. In the final considerations, it is concluded that clinical practice must be evidence-based and guided by a biopsychosocial perspective, aiming for long-term well-being and quality of life. The subjective nature of the narrative review is noted as a limitation, suggesting the conduct of empirical studies and systematic reviews in future research
