Abstract

Considering the importance of adhesion for the clinical longevity of glass fiber posts and the controversies in the literature regarding the most effective surface treatment protocols, this study aimed to review the literature on the main surface treatments applied to glass fiber posts and their influence on bond strength to resin cement and root dentin. To this end, a narrative literature review was conducted using searches in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases, including studies published between 2015 and 2025. Laboratory studies, clinical studies, systematic reviews, and literature reviews related to surface treatments, adhesive cementation, and biomechanical performance of glass fiber posts were selected. It was observed that mechanical and chemical treatments, especially the association of airborne-particle abrasion with silane application, showed the best results regarding bond strength and adhesive stability. In addition, factors such as the type of resin cement, adaptation of the post to the root canal, and proper clinical execution directly influenced restorative success. It can be concluded that surface treatments play a fundamental role in optimizing the adhesion of glass fiber posts, contributing to greater retention, mechanical resistance, and clinical longevity of restorations.
