The objective of this article was to discuss the relationship of peripheral nerve injuries with automobile accidents as a health problem in light of the scientific literature. The method used was a descriptive systematic literature review, using articles from the Pubmed, Lilacs, and Scielo databases, involving the reading and filtering of the most relevant topics, which initiated the reflective process for the completion of the work. The descriptors used were: Traumatic Injuries; Peripheral Nerve; Public Health. The results indicate that the morphological characteristics of peripheral nerve injuries determine the prognosis of the clinical condition of victims of traffic accidents and depend directly on the severity of the injury, and in more severe cases, it is necessary to evaluate the type of mechanical stimulus generated on the nerve tissue and the time to which the victim was exposed to it. It is concluded that the increase in the number of people suffering serious traumatic injuries caused by traffic accidents determines significant social and economic consequences, due to the fact that the injuries can result in death, temporary or permanent disability of the victim.
