ENVIRONMENTAL PERCEPTION AND CAATINGA CONSERVATION: COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS TO ECOTOURISM PLANNING IN PÉ DE SERRA, BAHIA

The caatinga, the only biome exclusive to Brazil, is rich in biodiversity but remains among the country’s most degraded and least protected ecosystems. The persistence of historical stigmas and increasing anthropogenic pressure highlight the need to understand how different social groups interpret this territory and recognize its ecological value. The objective of this article is to analyze the environmental perception of residents of Pé de Serra (Bahia) regarding ecotourism in the caatinga, examining how these perceptions can support social participation strategies in planning this activity within the urban perimeter of the municipality. The research integrated literature and document review, field observations, and the application of 165 questionnaires to residents of urban and rural areas. The results indicated broad support for conservation: 93% recognize the importance of preserving the biome, and 91% support the creation of a Conservation Unit. The community identified local environmental fragilities, as well as valuing geomorphological features and the area’s ecotourism potential. The results reinforce that the environmental perception of local communities is a decisive element for consolidating conservation policies and ensuring sustainable use practices in the caatinga.
