Abstract

Veterinary medicine plays a strategic role in public health, especially in the context of zoonoses and in consolidating the One Health concept. Internationally recognized by the World Health Organization, the veterinarian's role extends beyond animal clinics, encompassing epidemiological surveillance, food inspection, and actions within the Unified Health System (SUS). This study aimed to analyze the perception of the population of Roraima regarding the veterinarian's role in public health. This is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach, conducted between June and August 2020, using an electronic questionnaire applied via Google Forms. 260 individuals participated, mostly residents of Boa Vista/RR, with an average age of 25.9 years. The data were tabulated and analyzed using Excel software. The results indicated that, although most respondents recognize the importance of the professional and the relationship between human, animal, and environmental health, a significant portion associates the veterinarian exclusively with small animal clinics. It was observed that there is a lack of awareness regarding the role of this professional in areas such as sanitary surveillance, epidemiology, and primary care. It is concluded that there is a gap in social understanding of the scope of Veterinary Medicine in public health, highlighting the need for greater institutional dissemination and strengthening the professional's inclusion in public health policies.
