Abstract

Soil is an essential resource for maintaining ecosystems and environmental balance. Microbial activity plays a decisive role in nutrient cycling, structural stability, and soil fertility, and is therefore a sensitive indicator of environmental quality. This study aimed to evaluate microbial community activity and microbial biomass carbon content in soil in agroforestry systems (AFS), native forest, and cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) monoculture on a rural property located in the Marabá region, southeastern Pará, Eastern Amazon. The analyses were performed based on the parameters of Soil Basal Respiration (SBR) and Microbial Biomass Carbon (MBC), applying the fumigation-incubation method. The results showed that the agroforestry system performed similarly to native forest, indicating high potential for the recovery of degraded areas and ecological stability, while the monoculture system revealed lower levels of microbial activity and fertility. These findings reinforce the relevance of SAFs as strategies for sustainable management and mitigation of the impacts of climate change in the Amazon.
