CHALLENGES TO BREASTFEEDING: BARRIERS FACED BY MOTHERS AND THE ROLE OF NURSES IN SUPPORTING BREASTFEEDING

Breastfeeding constitutes a fundamental practice for maternal and child health, recognized worldwide as a priority public health strategy due to its nutritional, immunological, psychological, and economic benefits. The relevance of this study is justified by the need to systematically understand the barriers to breastfeeding and the role of nurses in supporting this practice, considering that exclusive breastfeeding rates remain below established targets. The main objective consists of analyzing the challenges to breastfeeding faced by mothers and the role of nurses in supporting breastfeeding. The methodology is characterized as bibliographic research of qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive nature, based on an integrative literature review through systematic searches in internationally recognized databases, without conducting field studies. The main results demonstrate that barriers to breastfeeding manifest in multiple biological, psychological, social, and institutional dimensions, demanding multidimensional nursing actions that integrate technical, educational, relational, and advocacy competencies. The conclusions indicate that qualified, continuous, and culturally sensitive professional support constitutes a determining factor for overcoming barriers and promoting exclusive breastfeeding, demanding systemic approaches that articulate individual interventions and structural transformations in public policies and work environments.
