Abstract

Considering that transnational crime in the Amazon is strongly influenced by hemispheric geopolitical pressures and by external demands that surpass the isolated response capacity of Amazonian states, this study aims to understand how international interests—particularly from countries such as China—reshape illicit flows in the region. The objective is to analyze the interaction between geostrategic dynamics and interdiction operations conducted along Amazonian borders, assessing the extent to which hemispheric integration between the United States and South American nations can strengthen operational capabilities against criminal networks. To this end, a narrative literature review was carried out, integrating concepts from geopolitics, hemispheric security, and jungle military doctrine. In this way, it is observed that global markets directly influence routes of gold, timber, narcotics, and minerals, while strategic integration with the United States enhances intelligence, interoperability, and territorial presence. These results allow us to conclude that effective counter-crime efforts in the Amazon depend on an interdiction model that incorporates geopolitical variables and promotes multilevel cooperation throughout the Western Hemisphere.
