The growing dependence of society on technology intensifies energy consumption, which is still predominantly derived from fossil fuels, responsible for high carbon dioxide emissions and the worsening of global warming. Given this problem, it becomes essential to advance in decarbonization and the energy transition, with green hydrogen standing out as a promising alternative. This study aims to analyze the importance of decarbonization, the role of the energy transition, and the challenges involved in the production of green hydrogen through water electrolysis, with an emphasis on water quality parameters and the potential for reuse of treated wastewater. To this end, a literature review is carried out, including scientific articles, technical reports, and international documents, such as the UN 2030 Agenda, especially SDG 6 and 7. It is thus observed that water purity is crucial for the efficiency of electrolysis, making it necessary to control conductivity, total organic carbon, corrosive ions, pH, and temperature. It has also been verified that the reuse of treated wastewater emerges as a sustainable alternative, thereby reducing the demand for potable water. It is concluded that green hydrogen represents a strategic advance for decarbonization and contributes significantly to a cleaner and more balanced energy matrix.
