HATE SPEECH IN DIGITAL MEDIA: AN ANALYSIS OF PREJUDICE AGAINST MIGRANTS ON THE BRAZIL-BOLIVIA BORDER

This article aims to analyze hate speech against Bolivian migrants on digital media, focusing on the border between Brazil and Bolivia, in the municipality of Corumbá/MS. The specific objectives are: to conceptualize “migrant” and “foreigner” and analyze their meanings; to examine anti-immigrant discourse during the Covid-19 pandemic regarding the use of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS); and to analyze comments and reactions on social media regarding the announcement of expanded public policies for migrants. The research is based on online ethnography conducted in Facebook groups, where xenophobic manifestations were observed. The discourse analysis, grounded in Foucault, identified how digital language constructs symbolic borders, activating exclusion mechanisms based on nationality. The comments reveal the persistence of the “foreigner” figure as a threat, even after legal advances such as the Migration Law (2017). It concludes that digital discourse acts as a technology of power, reinforcing inequalities and disputes over belonging.
