Abstract

Objectives: This work offers a detailed analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of ECT, its theoretical and practical foundations, mechanisms of action, ethics and safety of practice, clinical guidelines, and evidence-based practice. Results: Evidence suggests that the benefits of ECT can extend up to 12 months after treatment, stabilizing mood and reducing the recurrence of suicidal ideation. However, the need for more research on long-term effects and potential adverse effects was emphasized. These adverse effects, previously a major concern associated with ECT, have been significantly mitigated through the use of modern protocols that include anesthetics and muscle relaxants, precise adjustments in energy dosage, and careful control of electrode placement. Conclusion: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a therapeutic intervention that has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of suicidal ideation, especially in cases refractory to other approaches.
