INTERNAL CONTROL AND LOSS PREVENTION: A CASE STUDY IN A SUPERMARKET THAT IMPLEMENTED A LOSS PREVENTION DEPARTMENT

Losses in Brazilian supermarkets account for 1.89% of the sector's gross revenue, according to the 19th Assessment of Losses in the Brazilian Supermarket Retail Sector. Therefore, loss prevention aims to identify, analyze, reduce, and monitor losses occurring in supermarkets. This study aims to identify the impacts of implementing a loss prevention department in a supermarket. To this end, an exploratory case study with a qualitative approach was conducted using data collected through on-site interviews with the researcher once a week at the company during September and October 2020. This period coincides with the implementation of the loss prevention department, which began its procedures in September 2020 at the supermarket studied. Excel reports extracted from the organization's ERP system, containing all losses recorded from January 2020 to October 2020, were also obtained. This aimed to saturate the necessary information for the development of this research through the provided spreadsheets and interviews with the employees responsible for implementing the loss prevention. The research results showed that the implementation of a loss prevention department in a supermarket maximizes internal control and reduces losses by 23.61%.
