Dentin hypersensitivity is a common, multifactorial problem that is difficult to manage clinically. Among the therapeutic alternatives, the use of toothpastes with desensitizing agents stands out for its practicality and effectiveness. However, the literature presents heterogeneous results regarding the superiority among the available agents. This chapter aims to analyze and compare, through an integrative review, the effectiveness of different desensitizing agents in toothpastes for the management of dentin hypersensitivity. An integrative review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines and structured using the PICO strategy. The search was performed in the PubMed, Scopus, BVS, and CAPES databases, using descriptors such as dentin sensitivity, toothpastes, and dentin desensitizing agents, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. After organizing the titles for Microsoft Excel software, articles prior to 2020, duplicates, and incomplete articles were excluded, thus including 15 studies comprising randomized clinical trials, in vitro studies, and systematic reviews. Data analysis considered the type of agent, duration of use, evaluation methods, and clinical results. Stannous fluoride showed variable efficacy depending on clinical factors, while potassium nitrate reduced nerve excitability with continuous use. Nanostructured hydroxyapatite stood out for its ability to reduce hypersensitivity after periodontal treatments. Overall, all agents demonstrated a positive effect in reducing pain associated with dentin hypersensitivity. The review analyzed the efficacy of desensitizing agents in toothpastes for the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity. It has been found that the regular use of compounds such as stannous fluoride, potassium nitrate, and hydroxyapatite reduces pain from dentinal tubule obstruction, highlighting the importance of dental follow-up in managing the condition.
