Abstract

The digital age has brought social networks into a significant part of young people's lives, providing quick and convenient connections with friends, family and colleagues, as well as creating a sense of virtual community. However, studies have highlighted the relationship between the use of these platforms and body dissatisfaction, due to the pressures on appearance transmitted by traditional and social media, with an excessive focus on unrealistic beauty standards. Thus, the aim of this article is to analyze the impact of social media on adolescents' self-image and to develop intervention strategies to promote better self-images in this group. A literature review was carried out, searching databases such as Scielo and Portal Periódico Capes, selecting articles published in the last five years and available to read in full. The results highlight the profound influence of social networks on young people's self-image, highlighting the relationship between exposure to unrealistic beauty standards and body dissatisfaction. Finally, the study points to the need to develop intervention strategies to promote a healthy self-image among adolescents, in order to mitigate the negative impacts of exposure to social media on the mental health of this group.
