UNDERSTANDING THE STORY BEHIND THE IMAGES IN TERREIRO AXÉ ILÊ OBÁ

Abstract

Photographic equipment essentially uses the technique of capturing light to create a visual representation of a moment or scene, resulting in what we call a photo or photograph. For decades, photographs were restricted to elite groups expressing their values ​​and desires, without considering those being photographed. Beginning in the 1980s, with the popularization of this possibility of recording, we began to have personal archives, allowing narratives to be resonated with those photographed. This article analyzes images and narratives in their performance, whether activated as a procedure in the elaboration of positionality or from other approaches. It uses as a starting point the daily tasks and construction of the Axé Ilê Obá terreiro in São Paulo, with its great struggles to build it and then to avoid its demolition, and the various moments in which the brotherhood served as its guiding force. Thus, in the silenced words that can now be heard, we have this Candomblé group that for many centuries had to remain hidden, thanks to the various forms of structural racism in Brazil. But although criminal racism persists, this group can now exist.
