USING FLIPCHARTS AS EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR HEALTH LITERACY: A SCOPING REVIEW

This study sought educational technologies, such as flip charts, that addressed adolescent oral health literacy. A scoping review was conducted. The first question of the scoping review was: "What empirical evidence exists on flip charts (with an emphasis on printed health educational technologies) for adolescent oral health literacy?" Regarding the search and selection of articles, 226 studies were found, but only one addressed the research topic of flip charts for adolescent oral health literacy. Due to the difficulty in finding articles specific to the proposed topic (adolescent oral health literacy), the search was modified. The second question of the scoping review was: "What empirical evidence exists on flip charts for health literacy?" The search was expanded to include other health areas, aiming to verify the use of flip charts in health literacy educational initiatives. Of the 24 articles that met the eligibility criteria for full-text reading, a total of 19 studies were included in the scoping review. Overall, the importance of developing and validating flipchart-type educational materials for use with different populations, especially adolescents, was identified. Only one record of flipcharts on oral health for adolescents was identified in the reviewed literature. We suggest the development and validation of flipcharts on oral health literacy for adolescents.
