INTERSTITIAL GLUCOSE MONITORING IN NEONATAL FOALS

The present study aimed to evaluate the applicability of the FreeStyle Libre interstitial glucose sensor in neonatal foals undergoing intensive care, focusing on continuous glucose monitoring. Three foals in different clinical conditions were monitored, with the sensor placed in distinct anatomical regions, allowing real-time recording of glycemic fluctuations. The results revealed high variability in glucose concentrations, a characteristic feature of this life stage, reflecting the dependence on immediate energy supply and limited hepatic glycogen reserves. The use of the device was observed to reduce the need for frequent blood sampling, minimizing stress and discomfort in the animals. Despite technical limitations, such as fixation failures and interruptions in readings, interstitial monitoring proved to be a promising method to support the intensive clinical management of foals, enabling early detection of hypo- and hyperglycemic episodes. The findings reinforce the potential of continuous monitoring to aid in the therapeutic and prognostic support of critically ill neonatal foals and highlight the need for further studies to validate and standardize the technique.
