NURSING CARE FOR PUERPERAL WOMEN IN A HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENT: INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Introduction: The puerperium is a period marked by intense physical and psychological changes in the maternal body. It begins after placental expulsion and extends up to six weeks after childbirth. It is a significant moment in a woman’s life, related to physical and psychosocial changes associated with motherhood, sexuality, routine changes, and personal: To describe the importance of nursing care for postpartum women in the hospital environment. Methodology: The study was conducted through an integrative review, using a search strategy with the descriptors: nursing care, maternal well-being, and postpartum care. The databases Medline, Lilacs, and Bedenf were selected, covering the period from 2019 to 2024, in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. The selection was exported to the Rayyan software. Results: The selection resulted in 1,639 articles, with 71 duplicates detected and resolved, leaving 1,568 articles for blind peer review. Five articles comprised the final selection of the study. Discussion: Two themes were raised. The first highlighted that nursing care has the potential to promote maternal well-being, the formation of the mother-child bond, and maternal self-confidence and empowerment. The second shows that care is focused on the immediate puerperium based on the signs of biological body readaptation. Conclusions: Despite evidence pointing to the importance of nursing care beyond the physical dimension, it can be noted that care based on procedures centered on the biomedical model predominates. More studies are needed to contribute to the autonomy of nursing in the care of postpartum women in the hospital environment.
