MARABAIXO AND COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGY: CULTURAL PRACTICES AS AN INTERVENTION FOR THE PROMOTION OF ANTIRACIST MENTAL HEALTH IN THE AMAZONIAN CONTEXT

This article analyzes Marabaixo, an Afro-Amapense cultural manifestation, as a psychosocial intervention and antiracist practice within the field of Community Psychology. Based on a narrative literature review, national and international studies on racism, mental health, culture, and Black epistemologies were examined and articulated with anthropological and sociocultural research on Marabaixo. The findings show that racism is a central determinant of psychological distress among Afro-descendant populations, particularly affecting children, adolescents, and young people. In contrast, Black cultural practices emerge as collective devices of care, identity strengthening, and resilience-building. Marabaixo, by integrating music, movement, spirituality, ancestry, and community, operates as a community technology of mental health, promoting belonging, dignity, and historical continuity. Its aesthetic and affective dimensions support the symbolic elaboration of pain, the reconstruction of self-esteem, and the confrontation of structural racism. Furthermore, the central role of women—especially the caixeiras—and the prominence of collective memory reinforce its political and therapeutic nature. It is concluded that understanding Marabaixo as a psychosocial and antiracist intervention broadens the possibilities for mental health care, offering guidance for public policies that value Black cultural practices as legitimate resources for promoting life, resistance, and racial equity.
