Abstract

This article aims to introduce a discussion about the potential of the railway legacy of the city of Bauru-SP as a vector of sustainable urban, social, economic and cultural development. Using a qualitative and interdisciplinary approach, it analyzes the historical process of formation of the city, closely linked to the railway, and the current state of deterioration of this infrastructure. Despite the discontinuation of passenger transport, the remaining railway network represents a strategic asset for the restructuring of urban movement. The revaluation of this heritage, articulated with contemporary technological advances — such as the implementation of light railway vehicles (VLM) and integration through Mobility Platforms as Services (MaaS) — and innovative public policies, such as the Unified Mobility System (SUM) and the Cero Tariff, can catalyze further progress equitable, accessible and environmentally responsible. Conclude that the technological reconversion of the railway system constitutes an essential instrument to mitigate socio-spatial inequalities and reconstruct an urban identity that harmonizes memory and innovation.
