Abstract

Mental health in education has become a central theme in contemporary educational debates, given the rise in psychological distress experienced by students and education professionals. Transformations in teaching work conditions, the intensification of institutional demands, social inequalities, and the impacts of educational policies have significantly affected emotional well-being in school settings. This article discusses mental health in education from a critical and humanizing perspective, drawing on contributions from authors such as Freire (1996), Dejours (2012), and Han (2017), alongside studies in the educational field. Based on a literature review, it examines how school life can both reproduce situations of illness and constitute a space for care, listening, and support. It concludes that promoting mental health in education requires integrated pedagogical, institutional, and political actions committed to valuing individuals and building more humanized educational environments.
